Widow Outreach

Becoming a widow in India brings intensive hardship upon her and her entire family. In particular regions, these women are not permitted to re-marry, which forces them to beg on the streets - unless they find a better work alternative. In many cases, however, there is no alternative. Young widows often turn to prostitution as a way of supporting themselves, putting themselves at risk of disease, abuse, and further injury. Such a lifestyle brings an even greater shame and humiliation to their lives; affecting them not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually.

Widows are often rejected by their families and become outcasts in their communities. Fearing abuse, many decide to flee from what may have been their only source of comfort. Elderly widows are even more vulnerable because their strength is failing and they are unable to work, let alone beg. In India, the number of widows is an overwhelming 40 million.

Alabaster is reaching out to approximately 78 widows and their families through shipments of clothing and basic necessities, which are distributed by Helping Hands Welfare Society. Our long-term goal is to enable these widows to become self-sufficient entrepreneurs by educating them to run their own business in the sewing, craft, or cooking industry. It is also our heart to have a future safe place of refuge for both young and elderly widows - complete with Christian counselling, medical care, activities, and fellowship. While widows of all ages are in desperate need of friendship and interaction; elderly widows need to know that they still hold a valuable position in society, as they are able to offer wisdom and life principles to the future generations of India.
